Having worked in the APAC region for decades and for a large multinational biotech company, Finn Zedler always felt the need for change and the desire to build a new venture that can best transform his beliefs into action. “In every setting I experienced limitations and in many cases, we would not be able to meet customer expectations or have the best product to meet customers’ needs,” says Dr. Zedler, Founder and Managing Director, ADT Biotech. Take the high demand for low-cost TB tests, for instance. TB continues to be a major public health threat in large parts of Asia, and it affects predominantly lower-income groups—if not the poor. Most companies still ignore this market as the margins are low, or they fear to cannibalize their sales of higher priced products for other parameters. Witnessing such issues first-hand, Dr. Zedler decided to incorporate ADT Biotech in 2010 to improve the standard of diagnostic tests and procedures.

ADT today resolves all the conflicts within the diagnostic space by carefully selecting partners that are relevant to the markets and meet the high-quality expectations of the customers together with ADT’s own products, the LyteStar brand, which is developed specifically to meet market needs that have been ignored or are not effectively addressed. “After signing on our first principal in 2012, we started developing our own LyteStar kit for detection and differentiation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex and non-tuberculous mycobacteria. Later, we added our Leptospira and Scrub Typhus kits and in 2020, we introduced the LyteStar 2019- nCoV RT-PCR kit,” mentions Dr. Zedler.

Commenting on the industry, Finn Zedler mentions that there are three megatrends in the particular market niche of MDx for infectious diseases. The first is a strong drive for automation that started already many years back and continues to transform the industry and the competitive landscape. The second is the growing demand for multiplex assays, i.e. assays that detect various pathogens in a single test. “These two trends go hand in hand and we observe new fully integrated systems entering the market each year,” Dr. Zedler adds. The third megatrend is the localization of MDx with many APAC nations increasingly relying on local manufacturers.
