UVC has been around since the dawn of time and is stripped out by the stratosphere! Without this technology, the earth would look like a moonscape. It is fundamentally not a trend but a proven solution that is actively used in healthcare today as an effective killer of pathogens and microbes. Needless to say, there are many companies capitalizing on this opportunity, offering cutting-edge UVC solutions.

Finsen Technologies is one such company — yet, unlike any. Simply because the company’s founder, Bill Passmore identified the true potential of UVC nearly a decade before it became a “must-have” technology. Having had a long and successful career in the Medical Devices industry and holding senior roles in companies like Stryker Corp and Karl Storz Endoscopy, Passmore investigated UVC technology’s pathogen killing and lifesaving properties in 2011. He eventually won a distributorship of UVC products, importing them to the UK and Europe. This also gave him an opportunity to engage with industry professionals to connect the properties of UVC to improving and preserving the lives of people.

Over the next four years as a distributor, Passmore gained credibility for the technology and sold multiple units across the territories, creating the UVC market outside of the USA. However, time and time again, the robustness of these imported products was called into question by Passmore many times. The products they offered (and continue to offer today) did not stand up to scrutiny. When Passmore addressed this with the President of the manufacturer, he was told, “Bill we don’t care.” This did not sit well with Passmore, given the fact that this experience in healthcare led him to do the opposite and care about the safety of every patient. With that came the germination of the Finsen Tech ideal.

Robustness, reliability, and technology are the keys in the delivery of care, along with being science-led, so having this as Finsen Tech’s foundation is paramount. With personal savings, foregone salaries and investment monies, Passmore bootstrapped the company and developed THOR - the most powerful, reliable, technologically advanced infection prevention robot available in the market today.

“Testing, proving, and verifying the science and performance of THOR was, and still is, key and leading institutions such as the Health and Safety Laboratories, Health and Safety Executive, National Health Service (UK) and key US Healthcare systems all of which have used THOR and tested it to extremes against key competitors,” prides Passmore, Founder and CEO, Finsen Technologies. “THOR came out on top. And today, hundreds of THOR units have been sold worldwide and Finsen Technologies’ products are present in 40 countries. With the U.S. leading the way with accreditation, THOR is fast becoming the decontamination robot of choice.”

A large Health system-based in the North East of the U.S. carried out several tests before choosing to purchase THOR over the then leading product in the UVC market. After using the product for a year, the Infection Prevention Committee noted that the “clostridium difficile infection (CDI)rates have gone down significantly, and the only thing done differently to impact this was to implement THOR”. This was in February 2020; just prior to COVID 19 taking hold. In June 2020, the Health system bought another 5 THOR units to protect their staff, their patients, and their visitors.

The original unit THOR has evolved greatly, and a new product has now been launched to decontaminate the air continuously throughout the day. In fact, Finsen Tech also has a new decontamination cabinet, ZEUS. Understanding the unprecedented nature of COVID 19, Finsen Tech has fast-tracked development to ensure that the areas that pose a risk can be decontaminated in seconds using UVC. “Every day, our Research and Development Department is working to achieve ‘Repeatable excellence peoples’ lives can depend upon.’ We hold ourselves to the highest standards, and all our executives are experienced Healthcare Professionals with long standing careers in delivering and supporting healthcare. The new UVC cabinet due for imminent launch has been tested by third-party Microbiology Laboratories on the most virulent strain of sporicidal Clostridium difficile, the hardest pathogen to destroy, which currently kills thousands of Americans every year. The UVC cabinet developed by Finsen Tech achieved an unprecedented log 8 8: log 9 reductions, that is 99.9999999 percent effectiveness on hospital physicians clothing (scrubs), masks, curtains etc., in just 60 seconds. This is not just disinfection but pushes into the sterilization range of kill rate, which means that any COVID-19 present is obliterated in under ten seconds.

Reduced infection rates are better for the patient and better for the hospital, for the most part, reduced infections have a positive impact on bed availability, resource distribution and rehabilitation time. To break this down, if it costs on average $30,000 to treat a HAI i.e., an infection that the patient did not have when they went into hospital and acquired as a result of their stay. Then, the sum of just two HAIs avoided more than pays for a THOR. ROI could happen within a week or two of acquisition. It is a fact that with C-Diff, the complications can be huge for the patient, which could, in the extreme, result in sections of the bowel being removed at a huge cost financially for the health system and suffering for the patient and their family.
