The Key to More Effective Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgery has undergone rapid evolution in the past few years with the introduction of different and novel technologies, such as robotics, and virtual, mixed, and augmented reality. The innovations in this field are directed to improve treatment outcomes and ensure patient satisfaction. Despite the progress on the technology front, two main stakeholders in the orthopedic surgery space—surgeons and suppliers—still face multiple challenges.

Surgical burnout is a common problem for orthopedic surgeons who spend a significant amount of time planning operations. According to recent studies, orthopedic surgeons have the least time for themselves and their families. Another issue is technical and physical barriers to post-op follow-up, including access to patients and records.

An Awe-Inspiring Journey

Tamer IŞIN started his career as a local dealer of surgical instruments. As an engineer, he realized that the orthopedic surgery space lacked solutions to improve both surgeon and patient experience. This drove IŞIN to design and develop products for both procurement and surgical processes from the perspectives of a dealer, engineer, and businessman. Tamer IŞIN has been developing revolutionary technologies in the sector together with his 3 sons who also have many patents both in this subject and outside of the subject.

IŞIN’s work came to fruition in 2006 through Imed Surgical, which pioneered a revolutionary change in the orthopedic surgery space with the system developed for deformity analysis, diagnosis, and treatment planning with X-rays. In the following years, Imed Surgical developed its flagship ADAM FRAME Computer Aided Quadrilateral Octopod External Fixator—a new generation of orthopedic fixators. It is also the first computer-aided octopod pediatric fixator in the world with image processing technology and dynamization features.

The Ultimate External Fixator

Adam Frame has undergone iterations over the years to address the innate requirements of the orthopedic sector. From day one, it has provided solutions to many problems, and at the same time, provided successful treatment for many patients who would have otherwise faced limb amputation.

As a company that always strives for innovation, Imed Surgical is ready to enter the global market with a new external fixator named Işın T6, the first modular/ convertible computer-aided fixator in the industry. It is the most advanced external fixator, offering all treatment features provided by software technologies. As a product, it overcomes the disadvantages, cost problems, application deficiencies, and treatment performance problems of software-assisted fixators while bringing new concepts and methods to the medical literature.

Apart from the external fixators, Imed Surgical’s image processing, AR, and artificial intelligence infrastructures are also frequently used by surgeons. Making it possible is Imed Surgical’s collaboration with ZEB Innovation—a second-generation orthopedics software company with a focus on software-aided solutions, personalized diagnosis and treatment planning, and innovative digital solutions, such as personalized implants and robotic applications.

Working in liaison with ZEB Innovation, Imed Surgical has produced JoinTuitive, a diagnostic, treatment planning and simulation, 3D-printed guided-assisted surgery, and clinical follow-up software for joint replacement patients. In the global market, the total supply time in personalized joint prosthesis applications is between six to eight weeks, and the time spent by the surgeon in this process is expressed in hours and days. JoinTuitive can bring it down to minutes.

For example, in one knee replacement surgery using JoinTuitive, the time for diagnosis, surgical planning, and simulation for the patient totaled 17 minutes, with a total lead time of 48 hours and a surgery time of 35 minutes. One of the most important details of the JoinTuitive system developed by ZEB and Imed is how the system is made available for usage. This system is available to any company from anywhere in the world. ZEB Innovation provides all the technologies it develops for all the manufacturers without manufacturing implants but rather providing services.

Offering Multiple Applicability

Imed Surgical’s innovative products have enabled it to help numerous patients with a variety of needs over the years.

In one instance, Işın T6 External fixator was applied to an injured patient in an emergency room before he was transferred to an advanced hospital. The patient had general body trauma and an extreme soft tissue injury. After months of treatment, the patient was diagnosed as needing a new implant to treat a deformity in the bone. The surgeons were not familiar with the T6 fixator and called Imed for assistance. They were surprised to know that there was no need for a second operation. After analysis and planning made on the basis of the patient’s X-rays, they were able to complete the necessary procedures to correct bone deformity operation in 12 minutes using the Işın T6 External fixator and its software.

Imed Surgical Technology aims to introduce an orthopedic training simulator, MSS Orthopedic Training System, at the end of this year. The prototype tests are completed. It is preparing for market launch. The training system created a revolution in deformity and trauma surgery with software-assisted, augmented reality, and robotic elements.

“We are progressing rapidly on the way to implement Health 5.0 in the same concept as Industry 5.0. Our efforts to integrate our personalization, AI, and AR projects into existing Imed Surgical products will continue and 2023 will be a year when AR and AI will be implemented in all of our products,” informs Tamer IŞIN.
