Trish Costello, Founder & CEO

When I look back on the journey that led me to launch Portfolia seven years ago, it’s not hard to see how far we’ve come. In 2018, we set out a mission: to create a first venture fund product that helps women activate their wealth for returns and impact. I started this by exclusively investing in companies dedicated to women’s health. FemTech was the world’s first fund dedicated to women’s health followed by FemTech Fund 2 which launched in 2019.
Since then, we have made 45+ investments and started growing our company to include three funds focused on women’s health, and two more dedicated to active aging and longevity.
Our investment strategies stretch from early-stage startups to established companies like Maven Clinic and Everly Health, which are valued in billions. We are influencing the entire U.S., having a range of innovations and companies shaping the future of healthcare
Overcoming Challenges in the MedTech Landscape
In the MedTech industry, particularly areas like women’s health have always been historically overlooked. As a pioneer in this niche, we have the privilege to shape and re-define the market but it comes with many challenges. Regulatory hurdles, consumer impact, and the costs associated with reaching customers are just a few obstacles we navigate. The health-related regulations carry many complexities which can be daunting, but the potential rewards show to outweigh these challenges.
We have always expected the invested companies to become more disciplined and strategic in their approach, making every dollar count. It has been a period of doing more with less which has led to greater resilience and efficiency among our companies. Those that were not overvalued and were already lean and adaptable have fared particularly well.
“Women are the buyers for almost all health care for their families, making it critical to tap into the women’s health space.”
Recognizing Trends and Managing Market Dynamics
One trend that’s more evident is in the increasing focus on capital efficiency. In a tighter funding environment, companies that manage their resources wisely and build strong, strategic partnerships are the ones that thrive. Our companies exhibit strength by refining value propositions and finding many ways to enter and expand in the market.
Another optimistic development we are seeing is the growing investment in women’s health research. The influx of non-dilutive capital and increased research funding has been very instrumental in driving the progress and innovation of Portfolia.
Key Investment Factors and Strategies
As a venture capitalist, evaluation of potential investments involves several critical factors placing a high value on experience and reputation of the founding team. We value deep industry knowledge and established networks unlike many other firms that prefer younger and less experienced folks. It is very important for us to have a track record of resilience to navigate economic downturns and the understanding of the market to forge successful partnerships.
Looking Ahead: Future Developments and Emerging Opportunities
This dawn of personalized medicine which is driven by advanced data analytics and processing capabilities, promises to revolutionize health care. As populations age, remote monitoring and elderly care solutions will become increasingly important presenting opportunities for investment and growth.
The current investment landscape shows signs of recovery with markets beginning to open up. For those of us in venture capital, this period of transition shines an eye for strategic mergers and acquisitions, re-imagining the industry. It is a moment of ripeness and we are poised to capitalize on it.
The journey I have with Portfolia is rewarding. We are driving forward continuously in our dedication to women’s health and active aging. Our focus is on innovation and long-lasting impact which is leading us towards a road that is filled with promise and I want to see where it takes us next.[1]
Possible to rewrite this entirely? It sounds confusing to me. Trish's statements are always:
Portfolia's community creates the next generation of investing leaders. In turn, this community creates the most powerful network of accredited investors that empowers other women to use their wealth and influence to build they desire through investing in new innovations and companies.
