One of the major impetus is patient compliance, or centricity–the driving force behind the introduction of novel drug delivery devices. Such developments allow for self-administration of the prescribed medicine, which became very prevalent during the pandemic.
The pandemic set out new pathways for innovation as there was a high demand for self-injectable devices and wearable or connected devices. Consequently, there is an augmentation across various pharma sectors by adapting novel techniques and methods to counterbalance the social and economic gap created by the pandemic. The pharmaceutical industry also envisions progress through experimenting with new methods in research and development.
There was a slowdown in the innovation and use of novel drug delivery devices other than injectable devices during the pandemic. But, the pharma industry is aiming to raise its drug delivery devices manufacturing capabilities in 2022, as future COVID-19 vaccines are underway and there is high demand for injectable devices. The pandemic altered the perception of drug delivery systems, and there is a demand for the use of self-administration in medicine intake. Since the application of these systems is multiplying, companies are now focusing on the experience of the patient and designing drug delivery products with increased compliance.
One of the major challenges that the pharma industry is facing in drug delivery innovations is the preservation of biological products. The challenge, however, is urging industries to innovate delivery systems with higher security products and safely deliver such complex products to patients. Researchers find that there will be immense growth in the manufacturing of wearable injectors capable of delivering biologic products worth USD 4 billion in the coming years. These devices aim to administer larger volumes of biologics to the body in a non-clinical setting.
Sustainability is also one of the factors that the pharma industry is focusing on achieving eventually. It will be largely focused on the innovation of drug delivery systems in the coming decades. As drug delivery products have longer development cycles, there will be a need for sustainability attached to them in the coming years. Although there are reusable injections on the market, they require a high level of safety in loading, cleaning, and re-storing. Today, injections are being taken care of by clinicians, but pharmaceuticals are focusing on how self-administration features can be imbibed into these products. It is anticipated that the larger discussions on electronic waste management could lead to innovations in sustainable drug delivery devices in the future.
