Advantages of Minimally Invasive Catheters
Minimally invasive medical procedures involve performing treatments or procedures with minimal incisions or inserting instruments into body cavities. These procedures, such as laparoscopic surgery, utilize advanced medical device technology to minimize damage to human tissue during surgery. Typically, these procedures require small "ports" through which the doctor inserts thin tubes called trocars.
Minimally invasive catheters are highly tolerated by the human body and offer superior treatment outcomes. Additionally, they reduce the risk of infection, minimize trauma and pain, limit blood loss, and expedite recovery time. However, minimally invasive catheters must be safe and precise while accommodating various morphological structures, thermal conditions, and strength and flexibility requirements. Accuracy is of primary importance when it comes to minimally invasive catheters.
Major Types of Medical Catheters
There are four primary types of catheters: urinary catheter tubes, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC), central venous catheters, and implantable ports. Each type serves specific purposes. For instance, urinary catheter tubes are utilized for draining bladders, managing urinary tract infections, addressing retention problems, incontinence, and prostate surgery. They are used either intermittently or as needed.
Catheters are manufactured from a variety of medical-grade materials, such as red rubber latex, plastic, vinyl or PVC, silicone, and latex-free materials. They must have high-quality hydrophilic coatings and be available in different lengths and tube diameters (French size). Additionally, they come with two types of insertion tips: straight and coudé. Materials, French size, and insertion tip type are selected based on medical necessities and user preferences.
Things to Look Out for When Manufacturing Catheters
Specifications, dimensions, functional performance, hole diameter, tolerances, visual criteria, device maneuverability, flexibility, torque, miniaturization, and antimicrobial resistance are all crucial factors to consider when manufacturing catheters.
Length is another important consideration when it comes to catheters. They can range from 3 inches to over 6 feet (7.5 cm to 2 m) in length. While longer, minimally invasive catheters are commonly used, shorter catheters are still in high demand. Both types of catheters require thermal processing in industrial lab ovens to meet their specific requirements. For shorter catheters, batch and conveyor ovens are often more suitable. A lab oven with a slotted door is well-suited if a catheter has a distal tip requiring thermal processing.
