ACell is a regenerative medicine company specializing in the development, production, and commercialization of medical devices for wound management and surgical soft tissue repair. The company aims to establish itself as an innovator in regenerative medical technology, facilitating unique healing options for doctors and patients.
Patrick McBrayer, the President and CEO of ACell, said, “We are pleased to receive an Innovation of the Year award from the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and to be launching Gentrix Hiatal at such a vibrant meeting. This new product further broadens ACell’s hernia portfolio, and aligns with ACell’s mission, offering a safe, clinically effective treatment option for hiatal hernias that will help physicians and their patients. It also clearly demonstrates our commitment to serving general surgeons for all their hernia repair procedures.”
Gentrix Hiatal is designed for implantation to reinforce soft tissue in patients requiring gastroenterological or plastic and reconstructive surgery. It includes open or laparoscopic procedures such as hernia and body wall repair, colon and rectal prolapse repair, tissue repair, and esophageal repair. Gentrix Surgical Matrix Hiatal minimizes tissue attachment to the device in case of direct contact with the viscera. Gentrix Hiatal features unique pre-cut U-shape with smooth, rounded edges to reinforce the defect and safely conform to the esophagus. It comprises ACell’s proprietary MatriStem Urinary Bladder Matrix (UBM), a fully resorbable, non-synthetic material. It entirely remodels into the host tissue, minimizing the risk of erosion or complication. The product maintains the integrity of repair by facilitating the formation of biomechanically functional tissue similar to the native tissue.
“MatriStem UBM has been studied in more than 200 hiatal hernia cases, and shown to be a valuable option for surgeons and patients in this area. Surgeons using Gentrix Hiatal will find that the ease of handling and conformability of this device makes it ideal for hiatal hernia procedures,” said Hazem Elariny, MD, Medical Director at ACell.
The contributions of the company to the wound care sector spurred the MedTech Outlook Magazine to name ACell as one of the “Top 10 Wound Care Solution Providers – 2019.”
