In the last decade, the world has seen drastic developments in 3D printing and as for now, has important applications in various branches of medicine. Three-dimensional printing (3D) technology is playing a promising role in clinical sectors that include rapid prototyping of implantable products. This commercial technology CT (Computed Tomography) or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Images) is used to generate graspable objects from 3D-reconstructed images. These models enhance the patients’ understanding of their pathology and the surgeon’s pre-operative planning. Customized implants are made to match an individual’s anatomy.
The inclusion of additive manufacturing with surgical entities is often seen as a new revolution in surgical areas. 3D models are employed in the operational planning phase and Materialise Medical develops patient-specific instruments, implants, and devices. Many other innovations are still being tested and introduced periodically into the surgical sector on a regular basis. In the not-too-distant future, surgeons might implant new bones, joints, and even soft tissue organs that are 3D printed. Materialise Medical conducted a summit where the providers from different parts of the world attended and shared ideas and knowledge regarding parameters of additive manufacturing solutions. Many efforts are made to include the additive manufacturing into the curriculum of medical schools, ensuring that the upcoming surgeons’ are aware of the technology from the initial stage.
Many opportunities are opened in patient-specific applications in orthopedics due to the advent of 3D print technology. However, the limitation includes lead time in manufacturing processes, a high cost of implants and, lack of intraoperative flexibilities need to be addressed. Also, this technology is incorporated into DDS (drug delivery system) which might reset bony anatomy and deliver therapeutic material to the target tissue. Healthcare is hoping for better clinical outcomes and budgetary efficiencies.
