The use of positron emission tomography (PET) scans to determine whether the nodules and masses are benign or malignant has been a common practice among doctors. Not only does this technique help in the initial diagnosis but can also be leveraged to track the results of a treatment and monitor the spreading of disease in case of a diagnosed malignancy.
In the past few years, development of single proton emission CT (SPECT CT) has enabled doctors to understand not just the brain anatomy but also the functioning of the brain. The implementation of SPECT scan has been of great assistance to veterans who were told—in reference to the CT and MRI scans—that their symptoms were purely psychological. On the contrary, the SPECT brain scan has facilitated doctors to notice the marked abnormalities in the brain function. These abnormalities were previously recognized as idling neurons. These cells look normal on the CT and MRI reports because they continue to live in spite of not performing their regular brain function.

Another medical imaging technique that has evolved recently is the fusion MRI. Apart from brain anatomy, fusion MRI also measures the brain function. Furthermore, MRI spectroscopy has been advancing with the technology that enables differentiation between a malignant group of cells and a benign group of cells. This is achieved with the help of spectroscopic patterns visible in the cells. The advantage that looking at the spectrum of cells offers is what MRI was primarily developed for. It was considered a technology that would eradicate the need for a biopsy and the likely spreading of cancer with the biopsy process.
