Oncology being a widespread subject to study and research, it is not being practiced among many hospitals. Due to the lack of cancer specialists, there are oncology machines worth $40 million that are still untouched. A costal province named, KwaZulu-Natal reportedly has only one cancer specialist that serves close to 1.3 million patients. Private doctors are said to make use of the machines in public hospitals.

Overall, there are four machines at Charlotte Maxeke, two in KwaZulu-Natal, and the Tygerberg and Groote Schuur Hospitals in Cape Town have three each. Since the returns on the machines are low, each private hospital has only one machine. To avoid further lagging, private specialists are being employed to help facilitate faster healthcare implementation. Due to the absence of cancer treatment specialists, the KwaZulu-Natal health department declared that doctors from India and Cuba would be brought in to solve the issue. In a statement by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) last year, the KwaZulu-Natal health department violated the rights of cancer patients to receive treatment due to the same problem. The DA revealed that during 2015 and 2016 that 499 cancer patients had died at two of KwalaZulu-Natal’s biggest hospitals waiting for their treatment. Even with advanced technological evolution that can cater to the treatment of life-threatening ailments, the misuse of inventions can lead to huge financial loss. The degrading quality of healthcare is an issue that must be remediated to facilitate better patient outcomes.
