FREMONT, CA: Sepsis is an extremely dangerous condition, which typically occurs within hospitals. As per a recent study, approximately 20 percent of all the death globally are caused by sepsis, since it is a disease, which is capable of quickly getting out of control if not diagnosed early and properly. Presently, there is no convenient way available for the clinicians to provide sepsis treatment quickly. Therefore, the few days that is spent waiting for lab results end up being wasted, as the results are too late frequently.

EPFL’s researchers have now developed a small and convenient to use gadget that is capable of spotting two relevant inflammatory biomarkers related to sepsis. Besides, the device has also been tested in a Spanish hospital successfully.
The device is able to identify procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRO) in the blood serum and is as authentic as laboratory tests of today. But, rather than taking about three days, the gadget can spot the PCT biomarkers, for instance, within 15 minutes.
The sensor of the device makes use of a nanoplasmonic imager, which consists of a sheet of gold perforated with billions of nano-scale holes. These holes hold the potential of capturing nanoparticles mixed with the blood sample that is attracted to the desired biomarkers.
When the light from an LED illumines this metasurface, the beams are focused around the holes, and the holes that contain the captured biomarkers block the light from passing. This can be identified by utilizing common CMOS light sensors. The technology has attractive features, such as it is portable and quick to operate. These features allow it to be used by paramedics for triaging patients on the way to the hospital.
The team of EPFL believes that technology is relatively cost-effective to manufacture and can be made available rapidly, although regulatory obstacles and related matters will take their time.
