Climate change is now a pressing issue for more than just ecological scientists; it directly impacts human and skin health. The increase in UV radiation, pollution, and the rise of infectious skin conditions and chronic inflammatory disorders underscore a changing climate's significant and complex effects on dermatology. Rising temperatures and higher UV exposure lead to an increased risk of sunburns, premature aging, and, most critically, skin cancers such as melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Areas closer to the equator or those with thinning ozone layers are particularly vulnerable, prompting dermatologists in the regions to be more vigilant in screening for skin cancer. Temperature rise also boosts sweat and sebum production, contributing to clogged pores and infections. Plants like ragweed now have longer pollen seasons due to warmer climates, leading to increased cases of allergic contact dermatitis. Moreover, increased carbon dioxide levels are boosting plant growth, including that of allergenic weeds and toxic plants like poison ivy, which can cause severe skin inflammation. Climate change is profoundly reshaping dermatological care. Skin is the body’s first defense against environmental threats and is highly vulnerable to climate-driven changes. Public health efforts must prioritize climate resilience to minimize the long-term impact on skin health.
