With the development of technology there has been a significant advancement in the field of bio-medical science. Progress has been recorded in the field of biological image sampling process. Bio-medical spectroscope uses spectroscopy and imaging methods in different areas of life sciences including botany, biology, environmental science, food science, pharmaceutical science, physiology and medicine. For optimal view of the biological samples, spectrometers provide necessary outlook of the specimen. The use of spectrometry was limited due to its high price and bulkiness.
To overcome such difficulties, a team of Chinese researchers have arrived at a solution by developing a portable spectrometer that uses a smartphone as the display and data processing device. The device is relatively small and cheap that make it more accessible. It weighs around 5 ounces (140 grams), 1.2 inches (3.1 cm) in diameter, and 6 inches (15.5 cm) in length and costs less than $300. It has a white LED array for illumination with a wavelength resolution of about 17 nanometers, detecting in the range from 400 to 675 nanometers. The device is equipped with CMOS camera chip and transmits its readings to the smartphone and the user can budge the spectrometer across a sample and take pictures. The smartphone receives all the signals and exposures that digitally stitches them together, producing the final resulting dataset.
By creating a 16 second video from 200 images the researchers were able to measure the hemoglobin distribution in a volunteer’s hand. The researchers were also successfully able to detect the iron rich protein myoglobin in a cut of pork by using the new spectrometer.
