The medical aesthetics industry must consider the health risks of performing body contouring procedures.
Body contouring devices have risks and complications like any medical procedure. Certain limitations exist on who can be treated safely with each technology described below. Some complications may be temporary, while others may last for a long time, become permanent, or require surgery to correct. Service providers and clients must be careful when seeking aesthetic services and consider personal risk factors while reading the device manufacturer's information. Parties must understand all their options and consider each method and device's benefits, limitations, and risks.

The following on non-invasive body contouring technologies deals with complications associated with certain body contouring devices.
Cryolipolysis:Cryolipolysis, or fat-freezing, involves cold temperatures. This procedure kills fat cells and reduces visible fat bulges without surgery. Since fat cells are sensitive to cold, controlled cooling kills fat cells rather than freezes the skin. Patients with cold sensitivity disorders affecting their blood or skin should not consider fat-freezing. Service providers must know certain diseases like Raynaud's disease, pernio, or chilblains, Cold urticaria, Paroxysmal coldhemoglobinuria, Cryoglobulinemia, and Poor blood circulation. After a fat-freezing procedure, some patients may develop complications at the treatment site. Devices that use this technology are available only by prescription. Whether over-the-counter or home fat freezing is safe and effective is unclear.
Radiofrequency energy: Radiation (RF) energy from electrical energy causes heating when applied carefully to the skin. RF energy needs careful administration to the skin to cause heating in the fat layer under it and in the strands that connect the skin to it. Some devices use tiny needles to deliver radiofrequency energy into the skin. This type of procedure temporarily reduces the circumference of your body in the treated area or temporarily improves the appearance of cellulite. Some RF devices may also cause the skin to shrink or increase collagen, which may make the skin feel or look tighter. Not all RF devices are for cosmetic purposes. The FDA authorizes the marketing of body contouring devices only for cosmetic purposes.
Light-based energy: IR light is often involved in body contouring devices. Lasers and intense pulsed light (IPL) are some devices that use powerful light to heat tissue. It is possible to heat under the skin without burning it if IR light is applied carefully. Some researchers believe heating damages fat cells and shrink the short strands of connective tissue connecting the skin to fat and deeper tissues below. The heating effects of IR light procedures may temporarily reduce body circumference in the treated area and improve the appearance of cellulite.
Photobiomodulation: Light therapy, or low-level light therapy (LLLT), uses extremely low doses of visible light that don't heat the skin or fat, relying on several lamps or LED panels placed near the body. Suppose a client has photosensitivity disorders, active implants, skin cancer, or a history of cancer at the treatment site and is pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant. In that case, photobiomodulation therapy is a risky choice.
Customers and service providers must understand that any body contouring device could cause complications. Most complications occur shortly after a procedure and may last only briefly. However, some complications may last a long time, become permanent, or require surgery to correct. Not all patients respond to body contouring procedures or achieve their desired effect. Results may be temporary and may need more than one treatment. They must ensure that the provider must use clean devices between patients and track disposable parts and their disposal or renewal.
