Launching a Call to Action to EU policy makers, PAREA’s Tadeusz Hawrot and MEP Sara Cerdas want to see greater research into the potential of psychedelic medicines and treatments.
FREMONT, CA: More than 80 million people in the European Union suffer from mental health issues, and suicide is the second-leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 29. These difficulties were considerably exacerbated by the COVID-19 epidemic. In spring 2021, 64 per cent of young people between the ages of 18 and 34 were at risk for depression, in part due to social isolation and loneliness, according to the International Labour Organization. Several people, families, and communities affected by mental health disorders are being let down. It is indisputable that psychedelic drugs and therapy are combined to provide the core advantage of innovative psychedelic therapies. They provide individuals with a therapeutic window of time to address the underlying causes of their mental health issues while receiving support from qualified therapists.

Numerous accounts of patients who benefited from Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy (PAT) in clinical trials may be found in the public domain. The substances being tested for in these studies include psilocybin, 3,4-Methylenedioxy Methamphetamine (MDMA), and Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD). The outcomes are quite encouraging. For instance, a phase 3 clinical trial reported in Nature Medicine in 2021 showed that a staggering 67 per cent of patients receiving MDMA-assisted therapy no longer experienced Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may allow MDMA therapy as early as next year. About 30 phases 2 clinical trials are currently underway, looking at symptoms including treatment-resistant depression, alcoholism and other addictions, different types of anxiety, or various types of pain, including cluster headaches. A variety of neurological illnesses are also the focus of other early-stage investigations. The US FDA designated PATs for three trials examining psilocybin for depression and MDMA for PTSD as Breakthrough Therapy between 2017 and 2019. Governments all around the world are beginning to fund research into psychedelics, and prestigious universities in the US and Europe are creating specialised centres to study them.
The EU has to follow suit by offering financial options and starting to plan the implementation of these treatments. To ensure that PATs are soon accessible in a fair, quick, reasonable, secure, and lawful manner, work must now get started. Consequently, the Psychedelic Access and Research European Alliance (PAREA) has just been formally established as a new partnership. With 15 members including patient organisations, professional groups, umbrella organisations, psychedelic foundations, and the for-profit sector, PAREA is a distinctive and multifaceted alliance. Members of PAREA sent a Call to Action to European decision-makers that encapsulated our top goals and requests for policy.
One of the most exciting and significant recent developments in brain science and neuropsychopharmacology is the renaissance of study into the neurobiology and therapeutic uses of psychedelics. Europe needs to take immediate action to guarantee that patients receive psychedelic-assisted therapy on schedule.
