It is critical that blood pressure be high enough to keep the blood moving about the body. The initial source of blood pressure is the heart's pumping. There are, however, numerous other elements that influence blood pressure and contribute to the body's own continuous blood pressure monitoring system. Every artery in the body can dilate or constrict to a slightly larger or smaller size. When they shrink to a smaller size, the blood inside them is squeezed, which raises blood pressure.
If the blood pressure in the blood vessels is too high, it damages the organs to which the blood is circulated. This type of damage can affect several organs, including the lungs, heart, kidneys, and brain. Long-term high blood pressure can harm all of these organs. The issue is that most people cannot feel their blood pressure when it is excessively high. However, even if the organs appear to be in perfect condition, the harm to them is slowly increasing. However, high blood pressure is dangerous not just because of persistent end-organ damage. Blood pressure can sometimes get so high all at once that a blood artery somewhere in the body tears open, resulting in internal bleeding. This is why it's critical to have the blood pressure regularly tested with a reliable blood pressure monitor.
Blood pressure monitoring devices
Traditionally, blood pressure has been measured with a manual blood pressure cuff on the upper arm and a stethoscope. The air pressure in the cuff is measured via a pressure gauge, and the blood pressure cuff is inflated to a higher pressure than the blood pressure. The cuff's pressure is reduced further until all sounds of turbulent flow caused by the cuff's compression of the artery have stopped, and the blood is flowing smoothly and silently. That is diastolic pressure, which is the lower figure in a blood pressure reading.
Electronic blood pressure cuffs can do the same thing, but they can also automatically detect flow variations matching systolic and diastolic pressures. In hospitals and doctors' offices, these automated blood pressure cuffs are widely being used.
