A sphygmomanometer, or blood pressure monitor, is used to measure blood pressure. It consists of an inflated cuff that is wrapped around your arm and placed roughly at the level of the heart, as well as a monitoring device that measures the cuff's pressure. The monitor monitors both systolic and diastolic pressures. When the heart beats and pushes blood through the arteries, systolic pressure is higher, and diastolic pressure is measured when the heart rests and fills with blood. As an example, the blood pressure could be 120/80.

The blood sounds are heard by the clinician using a stethoscope in a typical analog sphygmomanometer. The vibration stops when the cuff deflates and reaches the diastolic pressure, which is detected by the meter, which records the pressure once more.
