Self-care behaviors and interventions by individuals and communities can lessen the burden on the world's healthcare systems.
Fremont, CA: Over 4.3 billion people, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), do not have enough access to the most basic healthcare facilities and services. In order to achieve the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) objectives by 2030, it is predicted that there will be a shortage of 18 million healthcare personnel worldwide. Additionally, the worldwide reach of healthcare goods and services has been negatively influenced by ongoing humanitarian crises, global warming, pandemics like COVID-19, and political conflicts, resulting in poor health conditions in afflicted areas. Empowering people to actively take charge of their health, self-care behaviors, and interventions by individuals and communities can potentially lessen the burden on the world's healthcare systems.

Self-care is a proactive, personalized activity that helps people achieve and maintain holistic health and wellness. It also plays a critical role in preventing and managing illnesses. Self-care includes actions taken to improve one's physical, mental, emotional, social, and environmental well-being. The agency to maintain and improve one's health as well as to avoid and manage diseases may be given to individuals and groups through self-care practices and interventions. When necessary, self-care may frequently be supplemented with goods and services from qualified healthcare practitioners, including doctors, nurses, and healthcare facilities, to enhance the well-being of the end user. Self-care will not just replace current healthcare practices or systems globally, but it will improve them in order to attain UHC.
The following pillars serve as the foundation for self-care treatments and activities.
• Physical Self-care
Technologies, goods, and services that improve physical well-being make up the practices and interventions of physical self-care. They could consist of dietary and nutritional improvements that strengthen the immune system. Gut microbiome-based technologies can boost general immunity and reduce the likelihood of allergies and infections, such as using probiotics in supplements, food, and drinks. Several components from the food, self-monitoring tools and trackers, over-the-counter medicines, skin, hair, oral care, and indoor hygiene and wellness sectors will generally be included in holistic physical self-care.
• Mental Self-care
The COVID-19 outbreak has a severe influence on mental well-being. According to the WHO, over 25 percent more people will experience sadness and anxiety in 2020. Despite the pandemic's years-long existence, there are still service interruptions in 44 percent of the countries. Thankfully, the epidemic hastened the creation and introduction of online resources for mental self-care. Many mental health applications are available to consumers worldwide today; only a few have scientific and research support.
• Social Self-care:
Due to persistent self-isolation norms over the globe, the COVID-19 pandemic has harmed social health. Globally, socializing for work and pleasure has been drastically curtailed, detrimental to general well-being. Yet, with the aid of online meeting applications, technology was able to close the gaps in social networking. Moreover, a number of businesses have promoted self-care, enabling better work-life harmony by allowing remote working, requiring paid time off and offering access to online counseling for better stress management.
