From decreasing in-person medical visits to reducing healthcare costs, smartwatches are already being used by patients for countless applications.
Usage of smartwatches for AFib detection
Atrial fibrillation or AFib refers to an irregular heart rhythm that generally becomes a cause for complications like heart failure, blood clots, and stroke. In order to properly diagnose it, there is a necessary requirement for its early detection.
Recently, Apple’s watch has the ability to accurately identify irregular heart rhythms by using an optical sensor for analyzing the heart rate of the wearer. On detection, then further testing can be confirmed to be AFib.
Following Apple, Samsung has also recently released its Galaxy Watch Active2. The company, to avoid AFib’s adverse effects, introduced the device that will soon enable the wearers to detect the heart condition via its electrocardiogram.
EKGs cannot be the stop button for heart health monitoring
Though heart health has always been the major area of focus, one feature that has just begin to emerge is blood pressure monitoring.
Recently, HeartGuide, a smartwatch, was launched, which is considered to be the first clinically approved, wearable blood pressure monitor. The watch operates much similar to conventional blood pressure cuffs, i.e., it depends on its own inflatable cuss, which is positioned within the band of watch for taking precise blood pressure readings.
It is very easy for these watch wearers to track and manage their blood pressure through an app on their smartphone. The device holds a particular promise for people having problems with high blood pressure, as it is now convenient for them to share the data with their doctor to ensure measurements are within a healthy range.
Besides, Samsung and AT &T are also looking out for ways to monitor blood pressure remotely. On the one hand Samsung us relying upon the sensors in its smartwatch, and on the other hand, AT & T has joined hands with OneLife Technologies to launch the OnePulse smartwatch.
Though the device is not capable of taking measurement on it soon, it can be paired through Bluetooth with other linked medical devices like blood pressure cuffs and glucometers for collecting accurate patient readings.
As 2020 is progressing, it can be expected from smartwatch manufacturers to introduce new innovations in smartwatches and bring in more types of capabilities.
