Neural flossing, also known as neural gliding, is a technique used to alleviate nerve tension and tightness, particularly in treating cervical radiculopathy. It involves neck exercises that stretch the affected area to a tingling sensation, reducing minor pain and improving flexibility, balance, and range of motion.
Fremont, CA: Cervical radiculopathy, a neck condition causing pain and weakness due to a pinched spinal nerve, can be effectively managed through physical therapy, which improves neck range of motion and strengthens muscles, typically lasting three to six weeks. Let’s see how cervical radiculopathy is assessed and treated and what physical therapy exercises are commonly used.

● Neck, shoulder, arm, and hand pain
● Numbness in your arm or hand

● Tingling in your fingers
● Difficulty moving your head normally
Exercises One Can Do
Chin Tuck
Cervical retraction, also known as the chin tuck, is an exercise that involves bending the upper cervical flex and extending the lower cervical flex, potentially reducing neck nerve pressure. To perform this exercise, sit upright in a chair, tuck your chin slightly, and draw your head backward. Keep your eyes level and your head straight. Hold the position for three seconds, then release it. Repeat for ten repetitions three to four times daily.
Neural Flossing
Neural flossing, also known as neural gliding, is a technique used to alleviate nerve tension and tightness, particularly in treating cervical radiculopathy. It involves neck exercises that stretch the affected area to a tingling sensation, reducing minor pain and improving flexibility, balance, and range of motion.
Side Tilts
Neck tilts are beneficial for cervical radiculopathy caused by arthritis or stenosis. Sit in a chair and tilt your neck to one side, bringing your ear towards your shoulder. Hold for three seconds, and then return to the upright position. Repeat ten times. Repeat for the other sides or bend in one direction to relieve a pinched nerve. Tilt your neck forward as possible.
Isometric Holds
Cervical radiculopathy therapy involves isometric holds, which include holding the neck muscles still and working on resistance. These exercises are practical for those recovering from surgery or injury, and physical therapists may also recommend isometric holds for the shoulders and arms to help manage the condition.
Shoulder Circles
Shoulder circles are a relaxing exercise that can improve postural awareness by relaxing upper and lower neck muscles. To perform, sit upright, lift shoulders to ears, roll backward, pinch shoulder blades behind you, and repeat for ten repetitions. Repeat this exercise multiple times daily to relax muscles and enhance postural awareness.
