Medication adherence is essential because it is taking medications as prescribed, and not doing so will increase the risks related to hospitalization. It can be led to unavoidable medical expenditure. Furthermore, for some pharmacy industry groups, medication synchronization can enhance medication adherence, especially for the patients who suffer from several chronic diseases.
The clinical outcomes can also be improved with the help of medical synchronization and the following adherence. Researchers have observed that after implementing a medication synchronization program, there is a decrease in hospitalization and use of the emergency department. The industry stakeholders and medical experts have also agreed that medication synchronization is a practical and effective strategy that can enhance medication management and adherence.
However, as per the researchers and stakeholders, there are few issues related to medication synchronization as they are associated with the patients. Many patients do not want to get enrolled in a medication synchronization program because the structure restricts them and their socioeconomic requirements.
According to a few stakeholders, there can be many patients who might not afford every copayment for the medication at one time every month. It will discourage them from utilizing medication synchronization. Moreover, some patients prefer visiting the pharmacy regularly or consider trips to the pharmacy because it offers them the opportunity for social interaction. Such types of patients will not be interested in medication synchronizations.
