Pre-operative
Wearable technology is used in prehabilitation, or pre-treatment rehabilitation, before the patient even enters the operating room. In a recent trial, researchers employed smartwatches and mobile apps to give prehabilitation before major abdominal cancer surgery. The findings offered preliminary evidence that such technologies can increase functional capacity before surgery.
Intraoperative
Wearables can take the place of physical tasks in sterile environments, for example. Surgeons, for example, employ arm-mounted devices to control a PACS and evaluate imaging data without compromising sterility. Surgeons utilize smart glasses or heads-up displays to receive real-time clinical or biometric data or superimpose diagnostic imaging, such as a CT scan, on the operational field at the patient.
Stress management among surgical staff
Staff in the operation room are also monitored using wearables and sensors to reduce fatigue and blunders. They could also be used to analyze data in order to provide help, such as showing nurses the equipment that will be utilized in the next operation phase.
Overcoming unnoticed deterioration of patients
Disease severity and clinical outcomes are measured using wearable sensors. They also improve the safety of patients. Patients in surgical wards are currently under-monitored for the majority of their stays, leaving them exposed to unnoticed deterioration. Continuous monitoring of a variety of parameters can detect early signals of deterioration, reducing the risk of problems and potentially assisting patients in recovering more quickly.
Postoperative
A simple device has been discovered by some scientists that can minimize swelling following a kidney transplant. Following kidney transplants, patients who used the device had shorter hospital stays and a 60% reduction in surgical site infections. Other researchers are working on wearable devices that can be used during surgery to provide continuous postoperative care for acute, subacute, and chronic spinal cord injuries. The goal is to develop and test three implanted devices and three wireless wearables that work together to track perfusion pressure, oxygenation, temperature, and other indicators while also delivering therapies.
