Pacemakers are small, self-contained, battery-operated electronic devices implanted into the chest, which help monitor and regulate erratic heart rhythms. By continuously delivering electrical impulses to the heart's muscles, pacemakers help to maintain a healthy heartbeat by encouraging the muscles to contract and maintain regular heartbeats. They find application in disorders such as bradycardia, an abnormally low heart rate, or heart block in which the electricity is delayed in reaching the heartbeat or is blocked. A pacemaker falls into one of three categories- single-chamber, dual-chamber, or biventricular.
Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs)
Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators are high-tech devices implanted that help in the prevention of sudden death from cardiac arrest. ICDs are generally recommended for high-risk patients that can develop serious life-threatening arrhythmias. This may occur as ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, and similar situations. Once this ICD diagnoses the irregularity of heart rhythms, it dispenses a shock that renews the heart into normal rhythm by avoiding the development of cardiac arrest.
Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs)
Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) are mechanical pumps that support the heart's ability to pump blood, particularly in patients with severe heart failure. For patients who are not candidates for a heart transplant, VADs can be utilized as a long-term treatment or as a bridge to heart transplantation. These devices can support either the left ventricle (LVAD), the right ventricle (RVAD), or both (BiVAD), depending on the patient's needs. VADs greatly improve the quality of life for patients with advanced heart failure by improving blood flow and reducing symptoms.
Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy
A biventricular pacemaker is used in cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) to synchronize the heart's ventricles' contractions. Patients with heart failure and impaired electrical conduction in the heart benefit most from this therapy. By synchronizing the contractions of the left and right ventricles, CRT improves the heart's efficiency and reduces symptoms of heart failure. CRT devices can also include defibrillation capabilities, combining the benefits of both pacemakers and ICDs.
