Remote patient monitoring devices have made it possible for healthcare professionals to treat patients who cannot get medical attention for various reasons.
FREMONT, CA: Remote patient monitoring (RPM) is evolving rapidly, driven by various emerging diseases and the corresponding regulatory push to expand access to care. RPM is a type of electronic medical record in which records are kept in a single location and reviewed by a clinician at a different location, using electronic tools connected to the system. After the data is transmitted, it may or may not be viewed immediately to determine its validity.

Healthcare practitioners are increasingly using RPM to treat patients with diabetes, hypertension, and other severe illnesses. RPM is also becoming an increasingly important part of care delivery due to regulations enacted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Clinicians can monitor patients through RPM when in-person care is impossible for chronic or acute conditions. Clinicians can monitor chronically ill patients in near real-time, collect pertinent data, and make adjustments to improve care outcomes with RPM. Patient tracking is especially useful for those with ongoing healthcare needs, such as diabetics, heart patients, asthmatics, hypertensive patients, and, more recently, those suffering from long COVID. A growing number of healthcare organizations are creating hospital-at-home programs for patients with higher acuity conditions. The programs offer various services, including echocardiograms and X-rays, oxygen therapy and intravenous fluids, pharmacy services, and skilled nursing care.
In most cases, hospital-at-home programs involve in-person care for the patient. Still, monitoring of biometrics is also supported by a team of care workers and telehealth visitations as part of the process. It is possible to use remote patient monitoring to track patients' recovery once they have been discharged home from the hospital following surgery.
The benefits of RPM go beyond clinical improvements. A modality of care can also be of significant assistance in reducing hurdles associated with social determinants of health, specifically social factors that negatively affect a person's health.
The cost of transportation is one of the biggest socioeconomic barriers to seeking health care. Long distances, broken infrastructure, and long travel times are the other transportation issues that cause hurdles in seeking healthcare. RPM has many advantages when patients face socioeconomic hurdles to receiving care.
