FREMONT, CA: Ultrasound creates real-time images of internal organs or soft tissues, including blood vessels using high-frequency sound waves. Using ultrasound, healthcare providers can examine soft tissues inside patients' bodies without making any incisions. Unlike X-rays, ultrasound does not emit radiation.
Many people associate ultrasound with pregnancy, but healthcare providers use ultrasound to examine different parts of the body for many different reasons.
Ultrasound imaging falls into three main categories: Ultrasound during pregnancy (prenatal ultrasound), In diagnostic ultrasound, and Procedure guidance using ultrasound.
Ultrasound during pregnancy: Prenatal and obstetric ultrasounds are often used to monitor the patient and her fetus during pregnancy.
Prenatal ultrasound is used by providers to make sure that the patient is pregnant, with more than one child, to estimate the gestational age of the fetus and the length of the pregnancy, and to make sure the fetal position and growth are correct. It is also used to monitor the heart rate and movement of the fetus and to assess the fetal brain, spinal cord, heart, or other parts of the body for congenital conditions (birth defects).
At 20 weeks pregnant, most healthcare providers recommend an ultrasound. During pregnancy, this test measures the fetus' growth and development.
Ultrasound for diagnostic purposes: Doctors use diagnostic ultrasounds to examine internal parts of the body to determine if something is wrong. Patients can use them to find out what's causing unexplained pain, masses (lumps), or abnormal blood tests.
In most diagnostic ultrasound exams, the technician places the transducer (probe) onto the skin. It may be necessary to place the probe inside the body, such as in the vagina or rectum, in some cases.
Diagnostic ultrasounds include:
Ultrasound of the abdomen: Patients will feel an ultrasound probe moving across their midsection (belly). Many causes of abdominal pain can be diagnosed with an abdominal ultrasound.
Ultrasound of the kidney (renal): The purpose of kidney ultrasound is to determine the size, location, and shape of the kidneys and related structures, such as ureters and bladder. The kidneys can be scanned using ultrasound to detect cysts, tumors, obstructions, or infections.
Ultrasound of the breast: Breast ultrasounds are noninvasive tests used to detect lumps and cysts in breast tissue.
Ultrasound with Doppler: An ultrasound technique that assesses how blood moves in our bodies. This test allows the provider to see and evaluate blood flow through the arteries and veins. As part of a diagnostic ultrasound study or as part of vascular ultrasound, Doppler ultrasound is often used.
Ultrasound of the thyroid: A thyroid ultrasound is used to assess the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland in the neck. It is possible to measure the size of the thyroid and determine if it has any nodules or lesions.
The use of ultrasound can help diagnose a variety of medical conditions, including:
Tumors and cancer are abnormal growths.
Clots in the blood.
Spleen enlargement.
An ectopic pregnancy takes place when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus.
A gallstone.
Aneurysm of the aorta.
Stones in the kidneys or bladder.
Inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis).
Testicular varicocele (enlarged veins)
