Old and traditional methods of pain management are not sufficient to meet the needs the modern chronic pain management
FREMONT, CA: In the wake of the pandemic, the conventional health mechanism has been challenged. Innovative ideas to deal with chronic pain are much required now. With one and half billion people developing chronic conditions over the world, this notion came into the light. With one in five adults experiencing chronic pain each year in Europe, the ailment seems a big challenge for the country as well as individuals. Despite viable therapeutic choices, 67 percent of chronic pain patients get insufficient therapy. A lack of understanding and organisational challenges among healthcare professionals is to blame.
A survey found that 41% of people are unhappy with how they are treated for pain, and almost 24% say their primary healthcare provider does not understand the impact of their symptoms and dismisses their condition.
These findings underscore the critical need to address health budgets and resource constraints that limit chronic pain treatment, as well as ensure healthcare professionals are trained and educated to maximize access to key pain therapies.
The idea of employing electrical shocks to alleviate pain dates back to the 1960s. By the 1990s, particular implantable leads allowed electric current to be applied to the spine (spinal cord stimulation) for drug-free pain treatment. This led to smaller implantable leads, wireless devices, and more recently non-invasive devices like BioWaveGO, which all provide a suitable electrical field directed to or near a group of nerves to activate local inhibitory interneurons that inhibit the nerve fibres that carry pain signals.
Because of this, pain treatments including acupuncture, massage, desensitisation, and ablative therapy have been replaced with newer treatments that frequently outperform earlier ones (e.g. thermal or chemical treatment). The use of neurostimulation to change nerve tissue responsiveness has recently been termed bioelectronic medicine. Unlike conventional medicines, bioelectronic medicine may give focused, tailored therapy without the need of drugs. The question now is figuring out how to provide physicians more access to varied equipment so more people who may benefit from it can benefit from it.
