Newborns born before the recommended delivery date usually have low birth weights and additional health issues. While not all preterm deliveries are complicated, this occurrence can adversely affect short- and long-term health. For example, some conditions may manifest at birth or later in life. Respiratory organs that are not fully developed may cause breathing problems. Another common disease in preterm children is heart problems. Interventricular hemorrhaging, or bleeding in brain tissue, can also result from early delivery. Finally, preterm deliveries may cause a situation where the babies' bodies cannot adjust to typical heat loss. The improvements listed below help neonatal nurse practitioners identify and treat problems that frequently affect preterm children.
Phototherapy
The most popular method of treatment for neonates with jaundice, which is brought on by an excess of the chemical bilirubin, is phototherapy. In a regular phototherapy session, a baby is placed in an incubator or cot and exposed to fluorescent light. The process alters the baby's bilirubin levels, which they then pass through their stools or urine. This secure operation exposes as much of the baby's skin as possible. The NPPs also ensure the newborn has a healthy diet and monitor daily bilirubin levels.
Artificial Womb

Eight lambs were successfully nursed through their gestation periods in a trial that mimicked the function of a mother's womb in an artificial setting.
The Heart Rate Observation System (HeRO)
Premature baby deaths are most frequently caused by infection. NNPs are now able to anticipate host infections up to 24 hours in advance because of NICU innovation. The Heart Rate Observation System (HeRO) uses an algorithm to find abnormal heartbeats that might be signs of a significant impending infection, a substantial health risk for newborns under three pounds. Finding the minor signs that can point to a condition's early stages is challenging. HeRO enables medical professionals to step in before an infection develops.
Artificial Surfactant
In 1953, scientist John Clements made a discovery concerning lung function that would ultimately save the existence of millions of newborns. Clements, a United States Army Sargent, had shown interest in going into the biochemistry area three years prior. But his commanding commander led him in the direction of physiology. Because of his research, Dr. Mary Ellen Avery of Harvard Medical School discovered that preterm newborns' lungs do not generate surfactant, a substance that lowers surface tension. RDS (respiratory distress syndrome) was the leading cause of newborn deaths at the time.
Since then, the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized a synthetic surfactant to protect infants against RDS.
Pea Pod
According to a product description provided by the producer of medical equipment COSMED, their Pea Pod density assessment device employs air displacement to calculate the body mass of newborns weighing between 2.5 and 17.5 pounds. According to the manufacturer, Pea Pod establishes the global standard for body mass measurements.
It takes around seven minutes to complete the process. The tool is relatively easy to use and outperforms methods described in published medical research articles regarding how it urges practitioners through the evaluation process.
Contemporary neonatal nurse practitioners aim to help pregnant moms have healthy lives by promoting preventative education. NNPs also reveal genetic characteristics that could cause birth problems. Future moms in America require a steady stream of certified neonatal nurse practitioners to improve infant health and guide the populace toward leading healthy, fulfilling lives.
