Researchers at Cornell University have developed tags that emit radio waves in the direction of the heart and lungs for accurate measurement of their activity. Measurement of blood pressure is also a possibility.
Based on near-field coherent sensing technique, each tag gets its unique radio signal. This allows more than a hundred patients in the same facility to be monitored simultaneously, yet uniquely without interference.

Interruption of patient sleep patterns during measurement of vital signs seen at the Center for Sleep Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian, inspired Edwin Kan, professor of electrical and computer engineering and his graduate student, Xiaonan Hui to work on the technology. According to Kan, the tag is powered by electromagnetic energy and its signals are as accurate as an electrocardiogram or a sphygmomanometer. The technology could also be applied to the measurement of other internal somatic motions such as in the eyes or bowels.
Utilizing fibers with a coating of nanoparticles, the tags can also be embroidered directly into the clothing worn by a person as exhibited by professor Jintu Fan and associate professor Huiju Park from Cornell’s Department of Fiber Science and Apparel Design.
Kan and Hui plan to test the technology more extensively with Dr. Ana Krieger, the medical director of the Center for Sleep Medicine and associate professor of clinical medicine, medicine in clinical neurology, and clinical genetic medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine.
Hui envisages the possibility of clothing undertaking real-time health monitoring, with negligible effort on the part of the user. Practically, every piece of daily wear could bear a tag with the user’s cell phone serving as the vital sign-signals reader that informs the user about their health condition each day. The paper, “Monitoring Vital Signs Over Multiplexed Radio by Near-Field Coherent Sensing,” published in the Natural Electronics journal gives detailed information about the system.
