Even in fields as advanced as the medical sciences, robotics has begun to make significant contributions. It is no longer a pipe dream to envision autonomous robots functioning as regular hospital employees and performing tasks such as scanning for vital signs, checking the pulse, reading medical records, and even performing surgery. Robots controlled by physicians have grown commonplace in the medical field.
Today, computer-assisted surgery is more prevalent. In this method, robots are employed to improve the procedure's precision and quality in a standardized manner. In orthopedic surgery, robots are employed to do tasks beyond the surgeon's manual capabilities, such as precisely prepping the bone surfaces. They can contact the bone or the prosthesis interface, enhancing stability. The initial use of robots in surgery was for femoral preparation in total hip replacement procedures. In subsequent years, they were also utilized in knee arthroplasty.
Robot-assisted orthopedic surgery has grown increasingly common for knee and hip replacement procedures. During surgery, deteriorated cartilage and bone are removed from the body and replaced with components consisting of polymers, high-grade plastics, or metal alloys.
There are a variety of ways robots can be utilized in orthopedic surgery. First, a Computerized Tomography (CT) scan is performed to determine the precise amount of bone that must be removed. This helps ensure that the implant alignment and placement process are accurate. The robotic arm is used to guarantee that just the necessary bone is taken during the process.
During surgery, one of the most challenging tasks is to accurately position the artificial joint components so that they work together seamlessly. Using the robotic arm, the surgeon achieves the desired alignment. The arm gives the surgeon visual, aural, and tactical aid that improves the mobility and stability of the joint replacement.
Additional advances in robotics will boost its application in the medical field. With these new tools, however, the healthcare sector still requires improved and comprehensive scientific evaluation to improve the dissemination of medical data.
