Further, gene-editing therapies are gaining significant momentum in the field of ocular medicine, as demonstrated by the growing acceptance of CRISPR-Cas9.
Using CRISPR to correct genetic mutations associated with retinitis pigmentosa has proven successful for researchers at the University of Iowa and Columbia University Medical Center, demonstrating the technology's adaptability to treating inherited and non-inherited degenerative illnesses. Simultaneously, gene therapies, such as Luxturna, which have been painstakingly developed to treat ailments like Leber congenital amaurosis, are about to move from being cutting-edge treatments to mainstream ones, signalling a significant breakthrough in precision medicine.
