FREMONT, CA: The electrophysiology (EP) service line has risen by leaps and bounds over the last decade, thanks to advances in interventional imaging, better catheters for successful ablation therapy, and the advent of robotic navigation devices to assist safe and efficient procedures.
In the next three years, demand for minimally invasive EP procedures is likely to increase due to the rise in the prevalence of cardiac arrhythmias. The increase in the number of EP centres staffed by skilled electrophysiologists around the world, and a preference for micro-invasive ablation procedures for immediate improvement of patient outcomes over long-term medication management for conditions like atrial fibrillation will also fuel the demand. These features are also making it possible for ambulatory surgical centres to have favourable reimbursement mandates for EP operations. The majority of treatments conducted in EP labs are for the treatment of AFib, which is the leading cause of blood clots largely contributing to strokes and makes people 5 times more likely to die from it. AFib affects approximately 3 percent of the general population and is expected to double in the next 30 years.
The rapid technological advancements have enabled collaborations between companies to develop catheters and imaging as a way to stay relevant by making procedures more effective and efficient. The complexity of EP methods, on the other hand, necessitates ongoing collaboration with electrophysiologists in terms of research and teaching. Despite advancements in interventional EP treatments, problems remain in the upstream care continuum, where an alarmingly high number of arrhythmia cases are detected due to a lack of understanding of cardiac rhythm disorders among patients and primary care doctors.
While consumer-oriented device firms are developing smart handheld or patch-based electrocardiograms to detect abnormalities, the problem remains in establishing a suitable care management loop that allows for quick access to therapy. Despite the challenges, disruptive start-ups are emerging in the screening and monitoring industry, creating clinical-grade personal ECG devices with higher specificity and sensitivity criteria.
