Digital healthcare is reducing eye-vision-related diseases. Recent developments in ophthalmology are decreasing rates of blindness and other vision impairments.
FREMONT, CA:Technology advancements in surgical and other treatments in the field of vision is decreasing rates of vision impairments, including blindness. Bionic eye implants, artificial intelligence, and 3D-printed digital contact lenses are some new developments in ophthalmology that integrate technological progress with medical technology. Digital health is improving vision and eye care.
Implants: Implants in the eyes are improving the vision of about 1.5 million people globally and are curing them of diseases like age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinitis pigmentosa. They have the potential to restore vision.
Artificial retina and brain implants: In the past, devices in digital health have been able to restore only minimal vision, costing customers around USD 150,000. Recently, modified versions implanted in the brain act upon the visual cortex rather than the eye itself. It is set to improve eyesight for patients experiencing blindness due to cancer, trauma, and diabetic retinopathy. Prostheses are implanted into the eye. They replace the damaged retina of patients suffering from retinal degeneration.
Gene therapy: The gene editing technology CRISPR-Cas9 can fix the mutation for retinitis pigmentosa. There is a 13 percent success rate in transforming the mutated gene to normal. Studies on rats show that CRISPR treats hereditary vision impairments and non-hereditary degenerative ones. Other treatments are closer to becoming common treatments that treat rare eye disorders, such as Leber congenital amaurosis, which fixes an inherited genetic trait.
Digital contact lenses: Google is working with other organizations to create a multi-sensor lens that can gauge blood sugar levels. The microchip and antennae will send glucose measurements of the wearer’s tears to the smartphone paired with the device.
3D printed lenses: Some lens technologies are now 3D printed and will feature a built-in LED display. It is one-third of a millimeter thick, accommodating an LED display that the 3D printer stacks many interacting layers.
Artificial intelligence: Image recognition algorithms have the potential to aid medical imaging-based diagnosis. Google is researching preventing blindness in diabetes patients through an eye-scanning technique that searches retinal images and helps ophthalmologists detect diabetic retinopathy. It uses Google’s ability to label web images, and the machine learning algorithm observes images of a patient's retina to identify aneurysms.
Through established technologies and future developments, diseases like AMD, retinitispigmentosa, and diabetes-related conditions can be reversed, prevented, and cured.
