Simultaneously, hospitals are struggling to reduce increasingly growing healthcare costs, but with IoT investments, they can dramatically reduce costs. It is not hard to see how the medical industry, and hospitals, in particular, would constitute a key component of the 19 trillion-dollars IoT market opportunity. Thousands of people suffer from cardiac arrhythmias caused by heart failure, which tends to be an extremely disruptive pulse flutter that can cause fatal strokes and heart attacks. There are a few prescription medications that can inhibit the symptoms. Still, they do little to eradicate dead tissue lesions in the heart that cause an underlying condition called atrial fibrillation, or short-term AFib.
One company is attacking this ablation issue to eliminate the lesions by softly burning them out with a laser. This feature includes putting a catheter into the heart to attempt an ablation to eliminate the AFib-causing lesions. Each system is hard-wired to a screen where the streaming data from the end of the catheter shows a view of the inside of the heart. But that’s not where the data stops like many machines between the heart and the monitors.
The firm is working with two real IoT powerhouses to make something much more powerful possible. One firm models the catheter’s operation so that it can send secure data to the cloud, where it can be analyzed by the other. The former company turns the unstructured data into structured data in the form of readable reports that the device company can use to improve doctors’ surgical performance. For high-value asset manufacturers, this kind of data can also increase the uptime of their catheter device. Others can use IoT Analytics to increase CAT-Scans and MRIs’ uptime because the data can show when even the smallest part shows signs of weakness or malfunction and enables a repair that keeps the equipment operating.
