The diagnosis is confirmed, treatment is administered, or the condition spontaneously resolves. From complete recovery to death, the outcome may vary.
Chain of infection: The chain of disease refers to the spread of an infectious agent through a series of steps linked to each other within a community. Among them are the pathogen itself, its reservoir, how it escapes from the pool, its mode of transmission, its means of entry into a susceptible host, and the host itself.

Blood or other body fluids may carry the pathogen out of the reservoir. Among the most important modes of entry are inhalation, skin contact leading to entry into an orifice, and ingestion of contaminated substances. It is the susceptible host that allows the virus to enter and establish an infection.
Controls at the primary and secondary levels: In order to reduce disease incidence, decrease its prevalence, or even eradicate it, infectious disease control is essential. By controlling the infection, the pathogen's chain of transmission is broken.
Under primary prevention, control measures are aimed at reducing the incidence of infectious diseases or their risk factors. The measures include immunization, good nutrition, fitness, hygiene, and sanitation.
The second type of control measure aims to reduce or prevent transmission by shortening the infectious period. This approach includes screening for infection to promote early detection and prompt treatment of those found to be infected, even if they are asymptomatic, known as secondary prevention.
Potential outbreak notification: Diseases that are easily transmissible are caused by pathogens with high infectivity and transmissibility. The early detection of the pathogen is essential to prevent large-scale containment from becoming necessary, especially when resources are scarce.
This is why public health authorities are often notified of potential outbreaks in a timely manner through a notification system. A notification will trigger an investigation of the potential outbreak, which can help arrest its spread. Even though minor outbreaks are common, having this type of system in place pays off in large epidemics or pandemics.
Early detection has many advantages, such as:
Keeping outbreaks to a minimum: The transmission of an infectious disease is dependent on a high number of contacts between the cases and the other individuals, as well as a high rate of dispersal of the contacts. Diagnosing the infection and the causative organism as early as possible enables the right intervention, such as isolation and quarantine, to be implemented in order to contain the infection and prevent its spread.
Constant surveillance is necessary to identify potential outbreaks and track the spread of the pathogen. In the absence of this, transmission continues, causing recurrent influenza pandemics and ongoing serious infections such as HIV.
The earlier the infection is detected, the smaller the outbreak will ultimately be. As contact tracing is resource-intensive, other methods of early detection are being explored. Infectious diseases with a high proportion of asymptomatic patients are particularly vulnerable to this.
