The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research provides clinical evidence that a new class of bioelectronic medicine that targets the autonomic nervous system, may offer additional protection from postoperative atrial fibrillation.
FREMONT, CA: Researchers from the Feinstein Institutes undertook a systematic analysis of 922 published clinical studies that used ANMTs for the prevention of POAF, including seven randomised controlled trials, and published their findings today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. POAF is a heart rhythm that is irregular and often rapid, which can result in a lengthier hospital stay, blood clots, stroke, and an increased risk of mortality. The researchers discovered that ANMTs reduced the frequency and severity of POAF, as well as the length of hospital stay and interleukin-6 levels, a cytokine protein that causes inflammation when present in high quantities. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and epicardial injections, in particular, showed the most potential in reducing POAF incidence among all ANMTs.

Bioelectronic medical therapies can lower inflammation, potentially treating chronic illnesses such as Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis. This research suggests that VNS and other autonomic neuromodulation treatments can help patients recover faster and avoid problems following cardiac surgery.This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis of autonomic neuromodulation's overall efficacy in the prevention of POAF. VNS, ganglionated plexus ablation, epicardial injections, stellate ganglion block, baroreceptor stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, and renal nerve denervation were among the therapies investigated by experts and colleagues. The findings of this study back up the necessity for larger, randomized trials to confirm that ANMTs are a therapeutically viable therapeutic option in this patient group.
