Diagnosis and treatment of chronic wounds can be difficult, and the medical staffs depend on manually inspecting the wound so that they can offer treatment. However, due to these types of treatment, it becomes a problem for the patient also as they have to make frequent trips to the hospital, and it can be expensive and time-consuming.
[vendor_logo_first]The technology that can solve the issue of wound monitoring is a low-cost wearable smart bandage. It can identify the initial stage of wound infection, like pH variation and bleeding. Furthermore, it can also measure the external pressure of the wound. It is similar to a simple bandage strip but can remotely provide the progress data of the wound. It can also send a notification to the medical providers and patients whenever it needs dressing.
How does it function?
The smart bandages are partly reusable and partly disposable. The sensors utilized for identifying the pH level, bleeding, and external pressure of the wound are placed on the bandage's disposable side. On the other hand, the electronics that are there on the flexible Kapton tape can be disconnected and reused numerous times.
The capacitive sensors can sense the pressure level and bleed on the wound. The resistive sensor can identify the pH level of the wound. Furthermore, the transformation in the capacitance and resistance is conducted by the electronics. The information sent to the patients or medical staff wirelessly can be done by utilizing an IEEE 802.15.4 standard.
The detachable electronics consist of a transmitter with a microcontroller, an LED, and a capacitance-to-digital converter (CDC) that are used to inform the status of the bandages and battery to the power system. These smart bandages can be utilized for monitoring any type of chronic wound irrespective of its size.
