FREMONT, CA: Pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), biventricular pacemakers, and cardiac loop recorders are all examples of cardiac implantable electronic devices used to help control or monitor irregular heartbeats in people who have certain heart rhythm disorders or heart failure.

If patients have been diagnosed with bradycardia, ventricular arrhythmia, or supraventricular arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, one of these devices may be recommended by their doctor at NYU Langone's Heart Rhythm Center.
Once implanted, the device continuously collects data on r cardiac rhythm. This information is wirelessly provided to the cardiac device team, either automatically via prescheduled transmissions or in response to symptoms. Without a doctor's visit, remote monitoring enables patients to check heart's electrical activity as needed.
Cardioverter Defibrillators Implantable: Individuals with advanced heart disease, heart failure, and specific inherited arrhythmias are frequently at risk of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias, which are rapid, irregular heartbeats. These individuals may require an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), which administers an electric shock to reestablish a normal cardiac rhythm.
An ICD is frequently advised for individuals who have failed to respond to other forms of treatment, such as catheter ablation or medication therapy, for ventricular arrhythmias.
Pacemakers: Pacemakers are classified into two types. The conventional model is subcutaneously implanted and is connected to the heart through electronic leads. A smaller, leadless pacemaker is implanted directly into the heart, eliminating the need for transvenous leads.
Pacemakers are used to treat bradycardia, a disease in which the heart beats abnormally slowly—below 60 beats per minute. The pacemaker generates electrical pulses that maintain the heart's average beat rate.
Biventricular Apparatus: A biventricular pacemaker functions similarly to a typical pacemaker but sends electrical impulses to the heart via a third wire to resynchronize the contractions of the heart's left lower chambers or ventricles.
A biventricular pacemaker, alternatively called a cardiac resynchronization device, is implanted when drugs do not improve symptoms of heart failure, a condition in which the heart does not pump enough blood to the body, and the left chamber does not beat in a coordinated manner. This results in the two ventricles contracting independently of one another. A resynchronization device synchronizes the left ventricle's contractions.
There are also biventricular defibrillators available for those who would benefit from resynchronization and require defibrillator protection.
