In most of the cases, landlines and desktops were the most in use; networks existed inside an organization walls. But now the times have changed the advances in the technology, and a growing number of use cases for mobility are seamlessly calling workflows and transforming care. The driving factor of that evolution is one area of development known as the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). The IoMT devices are deemed to save the healthcare industry with $300 billion annually, basically with the help of remote patient monitoring and improved medication adherence that can curb readmissions and aptly affect reimbursements. With all these progress comes new challenges, IoMT devices can be more difficult to monitor and protect rather than the wireless tools, and many find their way in a given network without an IT department’s blessings.

The vulnerability of IoMT Devices
Healthcare comes under the most targeted industry for cybercriminals, with one-third of all U.S. patient data breaches occurring in hospitals. One of the most recent security issues to impact medical devices like BlueKeep is another reminder. The attacks impacted computers, medical devices, and losing a medical device is a big problem. The problem is so vast that many hospitals had to turn away the patients last year after being compromised by ransomware.
Protecting the IoMT Devices
• Launching network segmentation to prevent unauthorized access- Enabling devices to talk across the network without limits poses a significant liability, predominantly giving the hackers a highway to data anywhere on the network. According to a report, 99 percent of lateral device-to-device communications are functionally unnecessary; therefore, consider how one can segment the network to mitigate risk.
• Starting with the basics- The very first step is to change the device passwords and gaining visibility into what’s in the network. The devices that one knows exists already cannot be patched, starting by addressing their vulnerabilities and putting better detection controls around them. Better the level of logging and monitoring of network traffic and other devices that communicate with that device.
• Update any existing security tools and processes- One should not connect anything to their network without running a cybersecurity risk assessment. Sometimes people in the medical field tend to trust first and then be cynical later when something happens. Therefore it is essential to establish a healthy balance between the two.
