Advancements in minimally invasive surgery are continually being made, and magnetic coupled surgical instruments among them are significantly improving surgical outcomes. See how magnetic controls can make surgeries less invasive.
FREMONT, CA: Technology is continuously evolving, and it is bringing a sea of changes in medical care. Minimally-invasive surgical procedures and operational efficiency are two major areas that have gained reasonable grounds in the recent past. Despite the non-stop advancements, it has continuously been a challenge to enhance the effectiveness of surgical instruments that are critical to minimally-invasive surgeries. Magnetic controls come in use here, enabling surgeons to improve surgical outcomes.

Magnetic tools allow a better view and enhance operational flexibility for the surgeons. Incorporating magnetic tools will enable surgeons to reduce accidental damages to nerves, blood vessels, and tissues during surgery. When the operation is carried out with the aid of magnetic surgical devices, the overall time a surgeon spent in hospitals is significantly reduced. Studies point out that the patients who underwent surgery aided by magnetic tools require less time to recover as compared to those who underwent surgery with conventional tools.
Magnetic Expansion Control (MAGEC) offers a non-invasive response for the kids with an early onset of scoliosis, a condition with sideways curvature of the spine. Doctors use a magnetically controlled rod with a remote control to increase the length of the rod as the children grow. MAGEC is a useful technique that is non-invasive and requires fewer incisions. Although traditional growing rods were effective, they needed several surgeries with an increased risk of complications in the surgical processes. Another significant advantage of using the MAGEC growing rod is that it can improve or control severe spine curvatures too. Other benefits of MAGEC laced surgery include less pain, less time for the procedure, and, therefore, less psychological stress for the patient.
Magnetic coupling for medical applications is another application of magnetic incorporations in surgical procedures. For instance, in contrast to the conventional procedure of laparoscopy, which requires fiber-optic instruments to be inserted through the abdominal wall, magnetic actuation offers a better alternative. In magnetic actuation, the number of incisions significantly gets reduced as it uses magnetic coupling for incisions. More specifically, multiple surgical instruments can be inserted through a tiny incision and allow the instruments to move in freely without complications related to access-point constraints. Magnetic incorporation also allows various deployed surgical instruments to move inside the part to be operated, driven by an external system with a set of permanent magnets outside. The permanent magnets will enable the movement of surgical instruments inside the patient’s body without the need for incisions.
However, the field of magnetic driven operations requires further advancements as the power of a magnetic device reduces with distance. It can be especially challenging while operating an obese patient. It is expected that future improvements will address the shortcomings as the advantages of using magnetic coupling for incision purposes far outweighs the challenges involved in it. Such advancement will mean risk, as well as cost-cutting for operational purposes. Thus, it doesn’t come out as a surprise that the medical firms are increasingly eyeing to leverage this technology for surgeries. Magnetic-driven advancements with respect to incision might be still less today. But current investments in the technology are sure to offer an edge to the medical firms as the minimized requirements for incisions seem lucrative.
