Surgeons lacked efficient planning tools for operation before the introduction of medical 3D printing. Their only choice was to use their imagination to create theoretical surgeries utilizing two-dimensional CT and MR images. When the surgery started, there was little information available, and surgeons were mainly unprepared, leading to unexpected outcomes.
Surgeons are offered a virtual three-dimensional segmented model with pre-surgical 3D planning. It greatly enhances their ability to prepare for surgery, which, in turn, improves surgical outcomes. Physical body parts are accurately portrayed through 3D printing, and patient-specific instruments (PSI) and customized implants are designed and printed in advance.
PSIs printed in 3D are used to carry out precise surgical plans in the operating room without any complications. Equipment is printed in biocompatible materials, direct surgeons where and how to cut, drill, or fix organs precisely during surgery. Such instruments are commonly utilized in orthopedic maxillofacial and spine surgery. The technology helps during bone and joint preservation, cut accuracy, reconstruction accuracy, and enhanced functional outcomes.
Surgeons should practice surgeries on patient-specific models before going into the operating room. Customized implants are created to the exact specifications of a patient, accurately replicating their anatomy and printed in medical titanium.

Medical titanium implants and customized plates can now be designed and printed for patients, resulting in much more precise surgical outcomes.
Surgeons can also better match the correct surgical tool for every step of an operation with 3D printing. Special tools can be printed to help surgeons achieve free oncology margins and safely resect tumors while keeping joints intact. Cutting guide jigs are used to carry out precise surgical plans by guiding saw blades and following the topography of the bone. Other jigs help with allograft restructuring.
