The OkuStim Therapy is performed with the OkuStim system, which consists of the neurostimulator (OkuStim), the electrode holder (OkuSpex), and hair-thin electrodes (OkuEl). The OkuEl deliver tiny amounts of current to the surface of the patient’s eye. They are held in place with the OkuSpex, which is connected to the OkuStim. The OkuStim also controls the current flow as prescribed by the doctors of individual patients.

The weak current that is applied to the surface of the eye, spreads to the retina, polarizes the tissue and triggers anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory processes. This effect of neuroprotection can slow vision loss and, consequently, stabilize vision. For maximum benefits, patients must apply this neurostimulation consistently, once a week, for 30 minutes.

Accessing and using OkuStim Therapy is very straightforward: the patients’ journey starts with visiting an opthalmologist or an eye hospital to obtain a prescription consisting of their specific stimulation parameters. The OkuStim system can then be ordered and collected from Okuvision’s authorized dealers. Here patients will have the OkuSpex adjusted to fit their individual physiognomy and receive training to operate the device and perform the stimulation on their own, at home.
