According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, worldwide, a fragility fracture is estimated to occur every three seconds. (Johnell, O. and J.A. This amounts to almost 25,000 fractures per day or nine million per year. The human suffering associated with these common but serious injuries is immense, and the financial costs are staggering. Fragility fractures are common; one in every three women over 50 years of age will suffer one, as will one in five men. UnifiMI implants incorporate by design proprietary self-tapping technology to advance bone chips forward in order to create a clean bone-implant interface that aids to maintain the integrity of the patient’s bone. Upon implantation, UnifiMI’s patented thread geometries are designed to preserve the architecture of bone by minimizing outward compressive forces applied to the mechanically integrated (MI) bone. The uniquely shaped thread geometry instantly interlocks with the bone to create a structural and functional connection rather than over-compressing the bone to create stability. This is similar to the way implants resist multi-axial loads when they osseo-integrate. Unlike osseointegration however, the UnifiMI connection to bone is instant, removable, and of course, mechanical, which gives it an extra benefit.
