OXOS Medical was born out of Dr. Kolovich’s frustration with the complexities of radiological imaging workflows in his orthopedic practice. He sought to create a faster, simpler, and more patient-centric solution.

Instead of large, fixed X-ray systems that require lead-lined rooms and radiation technologists to run them, OXOS Medical’s approach is an ultraportable, easy-to-use device that streamlines the process and enhances safety for medical professionals.

Traditional X-ray processes require in-depth knowledge to configure equipment settings, while OXOS’s solutions are instantaneous and hassle-free for any medical professional. These portable X-ray devices can be unboxed, powered up quickly, and are ready to capture X-rays in minutes.

Equipped with the market’s first FDA-cleared AI dose calculator, users only need to point the device toward the subject of examination for it to adapt its dosage based on the targeted body part, accommodating different thicknesses. A green flash indicates proper positioning and readiness, and the push of a button captures accurate, high-resolution static or dynamic imagery.

Ensuring the safety of operators was a top priority for the company when creating its technology and devices. The cumulative impact of radiation exposure is a major concern for radiation technologists, who risk exposure by conducting procedures throughout the day. In traditional radiology departments, operators have access to leaded glasses, gloves, and other protective gear. However, in point-of-care settings, the accessibility to protective gear is low and chances of radiation exposure are high.

“Our devices have significantly less radiation than equivalent devices on the market,” says Ruff. Unlike devices with a slow startup, it quickly ramps up from zero to full power, and back to zero again in five milliseconds, lowering scatter and ensuring a clearer X-ray with a smaller dose. OXOS Devices also overcome the challenges associated with less radiation and its detrimental impact on X-ray quality. To achieve higher clarity and consistently produce clear, noise-free radiographs, OXOS has meticulously refined the device’s detector and algorithms.

The company has devoted substantial effort to ensure portability, accommodating various scenarios where nurses, medical assistants, doctors, and other medical professionals move between places. For example, doctors can use the device in their primary clinic and take it to their satellite office the following day.

Deploying traditional X-ray machines is costly, involving a PACS server, network setup, and complex IT involvement. In contrast, OXOS bring simplicity in deployment, accommodating the needs of single installations and clients managing multiple devices across locations— without intricate back-end infrastructures.

OXOS pushes the boundaries of innovation, acting as a portable radiology department in a box. The device links to the digital OXOS platform for efficient image management and knowledge-sharing.

Users can view, transmit, and analyze images at their convenience on handheld tablets, phones, and laptops, or by directly connecting to a monitor. The digital platform also hosts an in-house teleradiology service, where they can upload images for real-time analysis by a radiologist.

To enable offline diagnoses, OXOS has leveraged international partnerships integrating various AI algorithms into their systems. Even without a network connection, a device can conduct instant local radiological analysis, empowering users to promptly diagnose fractures or sprains.

OXOS devices leverage computer vision technology to streamline training and usage. Adoption into any workflow is facilitated by a comprehensive training program for device users, administrators, and technology personnel responsible for running the system.

In parallel, impactful partnerships with respected people in the field like Professor Steven Grindel, MD, from the Medical College of Wisconsin, have played a crucial role in the success of its devices in two medical missions to Nicaragua. In sports settings, professional football, hockey, and motorsport teams use the device on the sidelines and in practice facilities, where it enables quick diagnosis and treatment for player injuries, eliminating the need for immediate hospital visits.

“We are helping health professionals provide better and faster care in areas where traditional medical imaging devices can’t be used,” says Ruff.
