Pioneers of Mobile DVT Compression

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is one of the nation’s most serious, yet least-publicized health risks. It has caused more deaths in the U.S. than breast cancer, AIDS, and traffic fatalities combined. Unfortunately, hospital systems haven’t innovated their approach to treatment or prevention in the last 40 years. Currently, hospitals rely on intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) devices for DVT treatment. IPC devices are large, bulky and fitted around the calf with a wrap outfitted with unwieldy tubes. The array of tubes and cords attached to the device combined with its immobility, pose a major tripping hazard for patients as well as surgeons. Patients recovering at home post-surgery with these devices are exposed to the same tripping hazards, and mobility is virtually unmanageable while IPC’s are in use, also leading to a lack of patient-use compliance.

As the market for patients’ at-home recovery expanded, the absence of a device truly made for the at-home setting became evident. This opportunity led Precision Medical Products (PMP), a DVT prevention innovator, to start developing a sequential compression device that’s easy-to-use, mobile, and portable enough for a patient to use at home. “PMP is committed to innovating the standard of care. By making our devices truly portable and battery-operated, we solved the problem of patient care both at home and in the facility, allowing patients freedom of movement and an environment free from tripping hazards for both patients and staff. This device will lead to safer post-operative recovery,” said Austin Phillips, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at Precision Medical Products.

PMP currently houses two major products in its suite of offerings: the CIRCUL8 Pro®, a powerful and portable take-home DVT prevention device, and the VenaOne®, a mobile DVT prevention system for use in hospitals. Unique and innovative, the VenaOne® disrupts the industry as the only battery-operated DVT device in the hospital. “Throughout our 11 year journey as a DVT prevention company, our passion has been to be the undisputed leaders in mobile DVT prevention from hospital to home as we provide a full continuum of care with our product line,” said Phillips.

Both products are self-contained and cordless and designed for maximum mobility. Despite being small enough to fit around the calf, PMP’s devices use the same intermittent pneumatic compression pressure (IPC) of around 55 mmHg as their larger counterparts. These battery operated devices can run anywhere from eight hours to a little over 20-plus hours, depending on the customers’ choice within PMP’s product line.

PMP is constantly innovating DVT prevention technology and has effectively enhanced and infused the existing IPC technique into its core offerings. Being able to successfully measure the usage and compliance of its devices is what truly jumpstarted PMP’s trajectory as leaders in this industry.

A Full Continuum of Care

PMP has pioneered a new market of mobile DVT compression devices and elevated the industry through an intelligent business model split into three verticals: the hospital setting, ambulatory surgery centers, and the clinic setting with surgeons. In the hospital and ambulatory surgery center model, PMP’s fully tubeless, cordless, and mobile device is used intra operatively and during recovery. Conversely, the business model in the clinic setting is a true at-home patient care approach where PMP works with the patients’ orthopedic physician or ortho spine surgeons to identify those who have moderate to higher risk for DVT. The surgeons then place an order for the device, at which point a clinical team delivers it to the patient’s home. Finally, the team educates the patient on the device’s importance, functionality, and its length of usage as per the physician or surgeon’s recommendation.

PMP’s continuous focus is on providing the most innovative devices that will help patients recover faster and stronger. A great example in this context involves an outpatient surgery center that wanted to enact a cord management program for patient safety, which would also help with their time and cost savings. VenaOne®, with its portability and cordless features, proved to be a perfect fit for their program. PMP was able to solve the problem on the day of the installation itself.

Catering to the Industry Need

Since entering the mobile DVT scene, PMP has been dedicated to designing a product line that fits its customers’ needs from shoulder to knee, hip to ankle, and to elbow and with which surgeons can provide pain relief to the patients. In addition to their work with orthopedic surgeons on DVT prevention devices, cryo therapy is another area where PMP equips surgeons to help patients recover post-surgery using cold therapy as an alternative to prescribing opioids for pain management.

For every one in four patients affected by DVT, as stated by the CDC, the first symptom is sudden death. “If we can quickly help determine when a patient is becoming symptomatic of a DVT, then we could save lives,” concluded Phillips.
